Lizardman may not have made it into the game (yet?) but that doesn’t mean you can’t improvise using the new Lizard race in Creation Mode. Still, with its RPG-lite mechanics Libra of Souls is entertaining enough, so long as you don’t take it too seriously, and with that character creator it’s entirely up to you how seriously you want to take it. Sadly there’s no voice acting for Libra of Souls, and the writing veers sharply into fanfic territory. The other major single-player mode is Libra of Souls, in which your created character takes part in a globe hopping adventure running parallel to the main narrative, with some nice interweaving going on should choose to play both modes far enough. Writing is mostly tolerable in a Saturday morning cartoon kind of way. Much of the narrative itself is delivered by voice acting over some sumptuous looking art that we’d quite like as our phone wallpaper. This is great for trying out characters while also seeing some backstory.

From jagged pixels to some low quality textures, made all the more jarring by their appearance next better quality textures, Soul Calibur 6 fails to take full advantage of the shift in engine.Īlongside the obligatory Arcade, VS, training, and online modes, there is also Chronicle of Souls, which retells the story of the first two Soul Calibur games. Unfortunately the game doesn’t always look as good as it could, and visual inconsistencies aren’t uncommon. Stages are varied and for the most part look undeniably gorgeous and postcard-esque.
Guard Breaks, Unblockables, and Critical Edge attacks all have a distinct colourful visual flare akin to taking a straight shot of liquid eye candy. Visually the game has benefited, much like Tekken 7, from the jump to Unreal 4. No one is altered too extensively from what we’ve seen, but if your main is Raphael expect at least a few hours of fudged combos before it all starts to click. Some characters have also seen substantial alterations to their move-sets, which may be a bit off-putting to veterans when they discover their main no longer plays how they remember. While it’s nowhere near the flow killer that Injustice 2’s clash system was, purists may find it an unwelcome addition. This on its own would be fine, but it then transitions into a slow motion game of rock, paper scissors. General performance has seen some marked imrpovements since the Beta, particularly in load times.Ĭhanges have been made mechanically, with the most controversial addition being the Reversal Edge, which is like a held block directly into a counter. Make no mistake, Soul Calibur 6 is a top drawer fighter.

Sure you won’t find tight input windows like Street Fighter, but Soul Calibur doesn’t need those to provide the kind of tense back and forth that’s imperative to a top drawer fighter. In fact I dare developer Project Soul have managed to pull off the near impossible, and produced a game that is instantly entertaining and easy to learn in a way that is great for beginners, but one which also has enough systems and depth to support the chess like strategy that a high end fighting game needs.

While the series has always been among the more accessible in terms of fighting games, lending itself well to the time honoured post pub punch-up slot, here it feels incredibly easy to pull off cool looking moves, with combos flowing naturally and logically. If you’re new to Soul Calibur you can expect to find a fun 3D weapon based fighting game, with an eight direction movement system that puts an emphasis on positioning, along with a colourful cast of characters that could have been ripped straight from an anime. While there is plenty to do in Soul Calibur 6, combat is of course the main event and we have to say it feels great in the hand. In doing so Soul Calibur 6 has something of an all-star reunion tour quality to it, topped with a heady hit of nostalgia for long time fans. Gone are the mostly unlikeable new generation of fighters from 5, and back in are old favourites like Taki, Kilik and Sophitia. Taking the story back to the Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur 2 era, this new entry aims to recapture some of the best things about the series as a whole. For a game that may well be the last in its line, according to Producer Motohiro Okubo, Soul Calibur 6 makes a hell of a case for the series continuing, despite some ugly missteps.
